KAT Starts All Black Belts Class

The Korean Academy of Taekwondo  is starting our ‘all black belt class’  with the first class on September 26th and the next class on November 7th.12065792_10207675681431626_7306999453999672471_n KAT is an extremely diverse school, not only in respect to people’s backgrounds, but our locations, skill levels, favorite part of training (sparring, demo, grappling, etc). It’s our greatest strength, but also our greatest weakness. The all KAT black belt class is a way to let the instructors from all our different programs train together.  The first class was very popular, and we can’t wait for the next one!

A Meeting of Grandmasters

(Seoul, KR)Grandmaster Ghassan Timani recently took a trip to Korea where he met the founder and 1st Head Master of KAT, Grandmaster J.K. Chung. While there Grandmaster Chung promoted him to 8th degree black belt in Hapkido. He will return early next year to test for his 8th Dan at the Kukkiwon. Master Kenny Yoo also traveled to Korea from Colorado.

While there the first two Head Masters reminisced about the first decades of our dojang’s life and talked about the possibility of Grandmaster Chung returning to teach a week’s worth of classes at KAT sometime during 2016. We will work on putting together the funding to see if this can happen. It would be a great experience for our students since Grandmaster Chung hasn’t visited KAT in several years.

2015 National Championships Results

(Austin, TX) – Our sponsored team and various athletes from the different KAT programs descended on Austin, TX for the 2015 USA Taekwondo National Championships. Besides the sponsored team, it was the first national competition for many of the competitors.

11692625_10206489911513764_4337718090720553008_nGrace Kosloski (12-14 Black Belt) has an amazing performance. She was called to the holding area in the morning but didn’t spar her first match until 10 pm. At that time she faced a tough opponent from Olympic Gold Medalist Master Jimmy Kim’s school. The girl threw a ton of fast spin hook kicks to Grace’s head, but she avoided them all the pull out a 5-1 victory. Next she faced the current US Open Champion and #1 seed in her division at midnight, who came at her with everything she had, but Grace picked up that victory. Next she had to spar 4 matches between 1 and 3 am! She was ultimately unable to defeat Faith Dillon, the same girl who had defeated her in AAU nationals the week before where Grace picked up a Bronze medal. She earned a well deserved Silver Medal, which also leaves her as the alternate for the 2nd World Cadet Championships in Korea.

Josh Kosloski (15-17 Flyweight) won his first match and then fell in the quarterfinals. It was his first loss in 18 months. The division was packed with 5 national champions and 5 US Open champions. It certainly seems to be a great division with many epic battles in years to come. Much thanks to Master Henry Cruz from Manila Taekwondo for once again coaching Josh and Grace at an away tournament.

Sir Salonis (Sr. Sparring) had a tough draw, facing the eventual silver medalist in the first match. He was still recovering from an injury he suffered the previous week in the AAU nationals and had multiple uncounted head shots.

Master Laron Younger (Ultra Sparring) had his first opponent forfeit, sending him straight to the finals. He lost a very close match to end up with a Silver Medal.

11665383_851918004903966_7445903965518034294_nFrom Master Kamil’s CVA program Adam Mohmand (15-17 Red Belts) has been showing tremendous improvement lately. He won his first two matches each by one point, sending him to the finals where he barely lost, earning him a Silver medal. Jibreal Jones (10-11 Black Belt) and Reda Essebar (6-7 Yellow Belt) both had huge divisions, and were unable to medal.

From Sir’s Storm TKD and William Smith High School, Salma Fakri won Silver, Cip Loya won Bronze and Axel Contreras won Gold, all in the 15-17 color belt sparring divisions. These were the first medals of what is sure to be many nationals for WSHS Taekwondo. Sir said “If you believe, All things are possible to those who believe.” (Mark 9:23.)

From LaKai TKD in Littleton Master Laron Younger did a back flip and 10 spin hook kicks in breaking, but it somehow wasn’t enough for him to defend his board breaking medals. Jared Younger followed in his father’s footsteps in sparring, also earning a Silver medal in the green belt heavyweight division. Isaac Smith made it to the finals in forms, but was unable11694131_10153325732106858_288803810_n to medal. In sparring, he fought hard and came home with a Bronze.

Ali Tahmourasi lost a heartbreaker 9-10 to miss out on the medal rounds. Zeke Nail won his first two matches but lost the third, and was unable to medal. Xav Nail had a huge division and won his first three matches, even while injured. He lost the semifinals in overtime and had to settle for a well-deserved Bronze.

Spring 2015 Black Belts

22395_1020928681258489_2942230002019690110_nKAT had our biggest black belt class ever this may. Parts of the test were conducted on 4 different days. The test featured students who had been training for many years. Students earned each rank from first degree to fifth degree.

The test also included some of our first ‘in utero’ students, people from families who planned for them to train and hopefully eventually earn a black belt while the children were still in the womb. We are happy our ‘future black belt’ onesies are finally living up to their promise.

The final part of the ceremony included opportunities for family and community members to detail how the candidates had inspired and taught them to live better lives. The group had been through much together in the many years since they started training. LaRon Younger, who began training in the 3rd KAT dojang (torn down to build Alameda off ramp) 19 year ago, was able to earn his master title due to his skills and work with the KAT Littleton branch.

Here are the official results:

5th Dan – Master Ron Roe, Master RJ Tomas

4th Dan – Master LaRon Younger

3rd Dan – Lexi Brown, John John Tomas, Harrison Archer, Shannon Clousing

2nd Dan – Max Rozmiarek, Max Minnig, Lydia McCullough, Isabella Walsh

1st Dan – MaryKate Berg, Ivy Yang, Lao Xiong, Cailynn Reed, Brady Clousing, Jonathan Reed, Addie Burson, JC Bell III, Cathy Burson, Erin Burson, Leena Alsalem, Antoine Martin, Joey Stockton, Jack Burson.

KAT Performs for Nuggets

11026034_941482275884566_4951646821282561053_n The KAT Demo team performed for the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday, Feb 25th, 2015. It was our 4th time doing a demo at the Pepsi Center and our largest. Although there was a blizzard right before the game that caused 15 of our performers not to make it, it was still a great show. KAT also sold 253 tickets (Nuggets record for a martial arts group) and raised $253 for the foundation.

The Nuggets thought it was a great demo, and upgraded us to 2 courtside seats.

KAT Takes State!

11025746_946678168698310_4483986365257061015_nKAT once again won first place overall in the Colorado State Taekwondo Association’s annual state championships!

Note from Master Bill : For Katie Pottle and I it’s extremely humbling to be in a position to lead such a diverse, talented, and hard working group as KAT. Congratulations to everyone on winning another 1st place at the Colorado State Championships. I’d like to revive my old tradition of highlighting 3 Heroes of the Day.
HOTD1: Laron Younger – Laron sparred some of the best matches I’ve ever seen today, and that’s saying something since I’ve known him for over 20 years. He showed timing, distance, speed, control and poise that you just don’t find in a heavyweight. Besides winning breaking and sparring, he also brought a strong contingent from LaKai Taekwondo- KAT Littleton that was instrumental in our overall placing. It’s inspirational for me to see how he actually gets better with age.

HOTD2: Sir Salonis – Sir is finally sparring in a way that shows he is well on the way to reaching his true potential. He’s acrobatic, powerful, and repeating as CO State team member. Sir also developed a great team from WSHS and yet still managed to find time to coach and ref.

HOTD3: Jibreal Jones – Jibreal won his first black belt division with a close match against a great opponent. He looks like a sparrer who is ready to break into the next level.
Special thanks to Master Kenny Yoo,and his great students, Jacob Gallegos, and to Master Kamil. Thanks to Zee Nwuke and Harrison Archer for referring all day.

My favorite memory from today was when Thul-kifl Micheal and I were talking about how hard it is to raise 3 kids and Behram Mohmand and his wife looked at us the same way black belts look at white belts when they said they had a hard class..
